BOISE - Did you know Idaho offers diaper and wipes incentives to help people who live with a baby quit tobacco? The Diapers and Wipes Program is offered through the Department of Health and Welfare’s Tobacco Prevention and Control program – Project Filter – which helps people quit tobacco. Anyone who wants to quit smoking, vaping, and chewing for good, and who lives with a baby can apply.
Those who are eligible will receive up to 12 months’ worth of free diapers and wipes at the same time they change their lives for the better by quitting tobacco.
Who is eligible?
Pregnant women, and moms and anyone who lives with a baby less than a year old who wants to quit. This includes dads, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and older siblings – as long as they all live in the same home as the baby.
Why is this important?
In Idaho, smoking kills more people than alcohol, car crashes, illegal drugs, murders, and suicides combined. More than 1,800 Idahoans die from smoking-related diseases annually – an average of four people per day. Cigarette smoke contains more than 4,000 chemical compounds, including 50 known cancer-causing chemicals.
Stopping smoking or vaping in even the last few weeks of a pregnancy will have immediate benefits for both mom and baby as well as throughout their lives:
- Quitting clears harmful gases, such as carbon monoxide, and other damaging chemicals from the body
- Quitting smoking reduces complications in pregnancy and birth, increasing the likelihood for a healthier pregnancy and a healthier baby, and reducing the risk of stillbirth or premature delivery
- Quitting also will help a baby later in life; children whose parents smoke are more likely to suffer from asthma and other illnesses that may need hospital treatment
How can I sign up?
To learn more about the program and receive free diapers and wipes when you quit, contact your local public health district or call the Idaho CareLine at 2-1-1 or 1-800-926-2588 for free, in-person support.
What if I want to quit, but I don’t live with a baby? Are there incentives for me?
Yes! If you or someone you know is ready to quit using tobacco products, all eligible participants can receive up to eight weeks’ worth of free nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) in the form of patches, gum or lozenges. To find out more about this free help call 1-800-QUIT-NOW (800-784-8669) or visit Project Filter. Providers can refer individuals to the program by fax or online, both available on the Quitline website or by helping individuals call the Quitline in-person.
If you or someone you know uses e-cigarette products and experiences symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath, or chest pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, fatigue, fever, or weight loss, seek medical care immediately.
