FIND Food Bank hosts free diaper giveaway at Mecca Elementary - KESQ

diapers.indah.link

FIND Food Bank had their first ever diaper drive to give out free diapers to anyone in need.

News Channel 3’s Caitlin Thropay was out at the diaper drive on Saturday at Mecca Elementary School and tells us more about the drive.

“I received diapers which is really necessary for kids right now when you don’t want to go out in shopping places and in public you know,” Brenda Zavala told News Channel 3.

Zavala is a mother of four children and spends her free time babysitting farm worker’s children.

“It’s great because it saves money and that with hard times right now it makes it a little bit easier with this pandemic going on because everybody is short-handed you know on finances and things,” Regina Ruthosky said.

Ruthosky is a grandmother to two little ones who also said these diapers come a time when the extra help is much needed and appreciated.

“We want to make sure that we get them all out to the community," Noah Morris, a truck driver for FIND Food Bank told News Channel 3. "We don’t plan on taking anything back. We’ve got at least 24 pallets of diapers and we want to make sure that anyone that needs them can get them,” he added.

Boxes and boxes of diapers were handed out at FIND Food Bank’s very first diaper drive.

“There’s a need for food and there’s a need for other items as well, whether that’s paper goods, diapers, whether it’s water, these are just basic life necessities,” Morris said.

These diapers come from state funding to help in the pandemic response. FIND Food Bank advocated for these items saying diapers are one of the critical needs local struggling families are in need of and can help them offset costs for food insecurity.

After their first drive, they have plenty more diapers to give out to the community.

“We’re going to have more distribution days and those dates are going to be on the website at findfoodbank.org,” Morris said.

FIND Food Bank will have rotating diapers distributions all over the Coachella Valley

The 5 Best Detergents for Cloth Diapers - Romper

diapers.indah.link

Committing to cloth diapers hinges on being able to maintain them. For your baby’s daily messes, you’ll need a heavy-duty cleaner you can rely on for properly cleaning your reusables. The best detergent for cloth diapers uses a formula with surfactants and enzymes to really clean soiled diapers and skips additives that can build up on the diapers over time.

Cloth diapers end up, well, dirtier than a standard load of laundry, and you’ll need to choose a detergent with a formula that’s up to the task. Look for ones with surfactants that allow detergent to better mix with water and enzymes that efficiently break down stains. Enzymes will give the surfactants an extra boost. In addition to what to look for in a detergent, it's also good to know what to avoid. Look for detergents free of optical brighteners, fabric softeners, and fragrance to mitigate build-up or absorption issues in cloth diapers. Gentler formulas without fragrance or dyes are also preferred for a baby’s sensitive skin.

Over time, detergent build-up creates a film over the fibers of a cloth diaper, which can lead to a distinct smell when the diaper is soiled and can also irritate sensitive baby skin; this calls for a process called "stripping," which requires a soak in a laundry treatment or "laundry booster." The stripping process removes build-up for cleaner and more absorbent diapers. Some boosters are also useful for getting diapers cleaner in homes with hard water.

Choosing powdered or liquid detergent for cloth diapers is really just a matter of preference. Powdered detergent tends to be more affordable and can come in a more eco-friendly container, and it may be more effective in soft water versus hard water. Liquid detergents are increasingly popular, but keep in mind that liquids make it easy to use too much detergent, resulting in more build-up.

Here are the best detergents for cloth diapers, as well as some laundry boosters and cloth diapering accessories that will make your life easier — and cleaner — too.

1. The Overall Best Detergent For Cloth Diapers

The overall best detergent for cloth diapers is this highly rated pick from a brand you'll recognize: Tide. Its formula contains enzymes and several biodegradable surfactants, including nonionic surfactants that don't bind with certain ions in hard water for a better clean. Tide's Free & Gentle formula skips dyes and perfumes so it won't irritate your baby's bottom, and this detergent cleans cloth diapers thoroughly in soft or hard water, making it a great place to start with cleaning cloth diapers.

The powder version of this dermatologist-tested laundry detergent cleans up to 68 loads, but it's also available as a liquid detergent if you prefer it (with enough for 64 loads in a bottle). This detergent is designed to be safe in high-efficiency washing machines. If you have an HE machine, you'll love that, in a quick cycle, this pick offers up to six times the cleaning power of other detergents, according to the manufacturer.

A helpful review: “Big fan of this detergent. It gets my cloth diapers clean and smelling like nothing, which is how I prefer them."

2. The Best Budget Detergent For Cloth Diapers

The best budget detergent for cloth diapers is a much-loved one with over 4,500 reviews, and it might have something to do with this box setting you back just $5. This powder formula is also tough on soiled diapers with a combination of enzymes and biodegradable surfactants, including some non-ionic surfactants that help it clean more effectively in hard water. It's also free of perfumes and dyes.

Keep in mind this affordable pick does use some brightener, which will whiten diapers but also means you may need to strip your diapers to remove build-up when using this formula. It's also worth noting you'll likely be stripping your diapers periodically anyway, and I have just the thing for it further down on this list. This box is enough for 40 loads of laundry.

A helpful review: “When I first started cloth diapering I was really having a hard time getting them thoroughly clean. Even after two wash cycles they'd still have an odor. I tried changing everything about my wash routine; different detergent, extra rinse cycles, extra washes, different temps, and load sizes but still no luck. I was finally ready to conclude it might be my washer when I tried this powder on a whim. It completely solved my problem! It's such a great price and product I've started using it for both diapers and all our other laundry. Everything comes out smelling fresh and clean.”

3. The Best Natural Detergent

If you prefer to choose plant-based products when possible, here's the best natural detergent for washing cloth diapers. This liquid detergent is a concentrated one designed to be used in cold water that provides up to 128 loads in a high-efficiency washing machine or 64 standard loads. Its plant-based surfactants remove tough stains and odors without brighteners, artificial fragrances, or preservatives and it contains enzymes. Grapefruit seed and citrus extract in the formula leave a light clean scent. Several reviewers confirmed that this detergent works for soft and hard water, but that it's a good idea to include baking soda or washing soda if you have hard water.

With a 4.7-star rating, shoppers love this pick, with some noting a little bit of this concentrated formula goes a long way with cleaning each load.

A helpful review: "This bottle may seem small (64 oz/ half gallon) compared to the detergent available in warehouse stores, but it lasted our family of three for an outrageously long time- at least 3 months-with use in an HE washer and was the right size to store in a cupboard. The clothing also felt clean and fresh. It doesn't have a heavy scent and also scores well for being environmentally friendly."

4. The Best Detergent Booster For Diapers In Hard Water

For homes with stubbornly hard water, this laundry detergent booster is a must. The mineral-based formula softens water in a laundry load, which allows your hard-working detergent to really clean those messy cloth diapers. Adding this powder to laundry loads along with your regular detergent removes tricky stains and deodorizes clothes and diapers and it's also a fantastic ingredient for stripping diapers. With an impressive 4.9-star rating after nearly 8,000 reviews, Borax is a cult-favorite cleaner. Using the recommended 1/2 cup per load yields 65 cycles with this 4-pack.

A helpful review: “We have extremely hard water where we live in the Pacific N.W. I have been using Borax for a few years. I put one half cup in every load of laundry. My whites stay white. I bleach my washcloths in my top loading washer. [...] We love Borax, it instantly softens the water in the washer, makes your laundry soap work better, your clothes will come out of the washer smelling sweet and clean! [...] Stains come out of clothes with Borax.”

5. A Laundry Treatment For Stripping Cloth Diapers

This hypoallergenic laundry booster for stripping deeply cleans cloth diapers to expel odors and detergent build-up. The biodegradable formula rewards your laundering efforts with ultra-clean diapers that are more absorbent and won't irritate your baby's bottom with old detergent. They come in convenient, travel-friendly packets with 10 packs per order.

This highly rated powder is powerful enough to work on diaper stains and those left behind from coffee, grease, tea, or blood to restore clothes and remove any dinginess. The booster is made without parabens, brighteners, and artificial fragrances, and it can be used for presoaks or prewashes and regular laundry loads.

A helpful review: “I’ve read horror stories about stripping diapers, but this product makes stripping a breeze. I bought all my diapers pre-loved, and most had huge detergent build up! It was causing my baby to break out in a rash. After soaking in RLR, and flushing them well, I’ve had no issues! Definitely will be buying again.”

Nice To Have: A Diaper Sprayer

A diaper sprayer will help you stick with a cloth diaper routine by easing the cleaning process. This 4.8-star rated kit created by parents makes pre-rinsing soiled diapers less messy and less fussy. The kit comes with a sprayer and everything you need to install it on a toilet, and the shield with a diaper clip contains the mess while spraying and later folds flat for storage.

For something similar but about half the price, this highly rated diaper sprayer is another top pick. Just know this sprayer isn't bundled with a handy shield pan.

A helpful review: “If you are going to do cloth diapers, this is a MUST BUY! This made cleaning out the diapers an absolute breeze. After a year and a half of using it, everything has still held together well. The sprayer has a high force of water, making it very effective in getting everything off the diaper. It is easy to use, easy to grip. The shield is obviously of good quality, the clip is strong and sturdy. [...]”

Also Great: An Alternative To Disposable Baby Wipes

As you cut down on waste with your cloth diaper collection, consider this French diapering lotion that functions as an alternative to disposable baby wipes. Apply the cream to a cotton pad or washcloth during diaper changes to clean baby's bottom – there's no need to rinse it off. The six-ingredient formula is USDA Certified Organic, and it replaces baby wipes, diapering ointment, and diaper cream with one bottle. Extra-virgin olive oil and beeswax soothe baby's sensitive skin, and this fragrance-free formula is safe to use with cloth diapers.

A helpful review: “Life changing. We paired this with our cloth wipes and cloth diapers. It DOES leave a slight residue on the wipes even after washing, but that's because it's full of wonderfully moisturizing oils that keep babies bottom soft and clean. Prevents rashes and does not stain cloth diapers. Doesn't have a smell really other than faintly of honey. So happy to have found this product. If you have a sensitive skinned baby, want to be environmentally friendly, and/or are looking into options for diapering I definitely recommend this product.”

Virtual Laurie Berkner concert Jan. 29 aids CNY Diaper Bank - Rome Sentinel

diapers.indah.link

The CNY Diaper Bank, a local, volunteer-run non-profit that collects diapers for families in need, encourages families to virtually join the organization at a live, solo Laurie Berkner concert from 6-6:45 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29.

The event is free, though a donation of $35 per family is suggested. All proceeds will go toward the CNY Diaper Bank’s diaper distribution program to keep area babies dry, clean and healthy. Families can preregister at CNYDiaperBank.org to receive a Zoom link, which will provide access to the show.

Laurie Berkner, a highly acclaimed children’s musical artist, has been dubbed “the queen of kids’ music” by People magazine and “the Adele of the preschool crowd” by The New York Times. Some of Berkner’s well-known hits include “We Are the Dinosaurs,” “The Goldfish” and “Rocketship Run.”

“The CNY Diaper Bank is absolutely thrilled to announce that the one and only Laurie Berkner will be treating our supporters to a live, virtual performance featuring some of her most requested hits,” said Michela Hugo, founder of the CNY Diaper Bank. “We are grateful for Laurie’s support and for the opportunity to fund-raise for our diaper distribution program, which has doubled in the past year as more families in our area struggle to make ends meet.”

The CNY Diaper Bank works with 34 partner agencies in the area to distribute more than 185,000 diapers to over 3,500 local babies and toddlers each month. The organization has distributed more than 3 million diapers since its inception, with nearly 2 million diapers having been distributed in 2020 alone.

Half of all children under 5-years-old in Syracuse alone live in poverty, and one out of four lives in extreme poverty. Since an adequate supply of diapers for a single child can cost $100 per month, diapers become an expense many families can’t afford. Though they are an essential need for babies, diapers are not covered by public safety-net programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or by Women, Infants and Children (WIC) benefits.

Research shows that children left in soiled diapers are at risk for infections and can suffer from prolonged crying and interrupted sleep. Mothers who face diaper need often have heightened anxiety and stress levels and are more likely to experience depression.

The most effective way to support the CNY Diaper Bank is through monetary donations. The organization can purchase diapers for families in bulk for an average cost of 13 cents per diaper, compared with the retail price of 25-35 cents a piece.

An additional way to support the CNY Diaper Bank is by purchasing apparel online from SYR Clothing Co. at SYRClothingCo.com. The street-wear brand has a special collection for the diaper bank featuring onesies, bibs, tops and additional items. SYR Clothing Co. will donate a portion of every order received on its website in January and February to the organization, in addition to donating 65% of sales of the special diaper bank onesie and 50% of proceeds from any purchase made from the CNY Diaper Bank collection.

SYR Clothing Co. will continue to donate 50% of sales from the diaper bank collection throughout the rest of the year.

The Weeknd's Nickname Is “Diapers” - Stereogum

diapers.indah.link

Popular singing guy the Weeknd is the subject of a new Billboard cover story. Considering that the Weeknd has lately been reaching new levels of singing-guy popularity, he and Billboard have much to discuss: The phenomenal success of his 2020 album After Hours, his upcoming gig at the Super Bowl Halftime Show, his anger over getting no Grammy nominations. But in the interview, the Weeknd said something that was destined to overshadow anything else that he might possibly had to say. He mentioned that people in his entourage have given him the nickname “Diapers.”

Here’s the key passage:

They call me “Diapers” because I always change my mind. La Mar [Taylor, creative director of the Weeknd’s XO label] keeps me on track, for example, with music videos and keeping a [consistent] body of visual work. I have a knack to be like, “I want to do something else. I want to look different. I want to drop more music.” They’re there to be like, “Let’s just keep this focused.”

So, to recap: The Weeknd’s nickname is “Diapers” because he changes his mind a lot. That doesn’t make any sense! Babies frequently have their diapers changed for them, but this process has very little in common with the changing whims of a popular singing guy. If your friends have given you a nickname like “Diapers,” there is probably more going on than the simple reality that you often change your mind. There might be a deeper story. Maybe something happened. Or maybe it’s just that many of your ideas are… shitty?

In any case, Diapers will headline the Super Bowl Halftime Show 2/7. You can read the Billboard cover story on Diapers here.

Florida bill would make diapers exempt from sales tax - WFLA

diapers.indah.link
Business_1547052038714

(AP Photo/Brynn Anderson)

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA)— A Plantation Democrat says diapers for babies and adult incontinence products should be tax-exempt.

Sen. Lauren Book on Tuesday introduced a bill exempting diapers and adult incontinence undergarments from sales tax. If passed, SB 806 would make Florida the fifteenth state to remove sales tax charges for these essential health and hygiene products.

Families spend upwards of $70 per month on diapers, and use as many as 2,700 diapers per year, according to Investopedia. Food stamps cannot be used to purchase diapers, and families can’t receive federal or cash assistance to buy diapers unless they’re enrolled in the the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). One in three U.S. families report experiencing diaper need, according to Book.

“It’s time to stop taxing Florida families for these essential healthcare items,” says Book, who chairs the Senate Committee on Children, Families, and Elder Affairs. “Caring for young children and adults with incontinence issues comes with overwhelming costs. For the health, safety, and dignity of families, Florida should join other states across the country and stop taxing these necessary healthcare items.”

Book introduced similar legislation in previous years, but the bills died in the Finance and Tax Committee.

If approved, the legislation would take effect on Jan. 1, 2022.

The Weeknd’s team has a nickname for him: “Diapers” - The FADER

diapers.indah.link

The Weeknd and members of his inner circle at XO are on the cover of the latest issue of Billboard. The biggest news isn't the mention of a new album (it's in the works) or Abel Tesfaye's thoughts on an upcoming tour (six dates have sold out, grossing between $1.2 and $1.4 million per show). No, the key fact from this profile is the revelation that the The Weeknd is known as "Diapers" by some of his team.

“They call me ‘Diapers’ because I always change my mind,” Tesfaye says. “La Mar [Taylor, XO's Creative Director] keeps me on track, for example, with music videos and keeping a [consistent] body of visual work. I have a knack to be like, ‘I want to do something else. I want to look different. I want to drop more music.’ They’re there to be like, ‘Let’s just keep this focused.’ ”

There's one thing Tesfaye hasn't changed his mind too much about: his snub at the 2021 Grammys, where he was locked out despite the global success of his album After Hours and its single "Blinding Lights." When he first heard the news, Tesfaye says it felt like a "sucker punch." "“Because it just kind of hit me out of nowhere. I definitely felt ... I felt things. I don’t know if it was sadness or anger. I think it was just confusion."

He continued: "I just wanted answers. Like, ‘What happened?’ We did everything right, I think. I’m not a cocky person. I’m not arrogant. People told me I was going to get nominated. The world told me. Like, ‘This is it; this is your year.’ We were all very confused.”

After the Grammy nominations were corrupt, Tesfaye called the institution "corrupt" in a tweet. Grammys chief executive Harvey Mason Jr. denied this in an interview with Variety. "I don’t think [The Weeknd's lack of nominations] calls [the nomination process] into question, honestly."

When asked about potential racial biases at the Recording Academy, Tesfaye demurs. “If you were like, ‘Do you think the Grammys are racist?’ I think the only real answer is that in the last 61 years of the Grammys, only 10 Black artists have won album of the year,” he says. “I don’t want to make this about me. That’s just a fact.”

Wyoming lawmakers aim to keep taxing diapers, feminine products - Jackson Hole News&Guide

diapers.indah.link

SHERIDAN — A Senate committee has rejected a bill to exempt necessary hygiene products from taxation in Wyoming.

The Essential Health Product Dignity Act, sponsored by the Joint Revenue Interim Committee, aimed to exempt feminine hygiene products and diapers from being taxed in the state. The bill was also proposed during the Legislature’s 2020 session, when it failed to receive a positive vote from two-thirds of the Senate’s members on introduction for it to move forward to potentially become law.

Sen. Affie Ellis, R-Cheyenne, who presented the bill Tuesday to the Senate Revenue Committee, said most states exempt non-luxury necessities or essential items.

“In Wyoming this includes things like groceries, prescription drugs and prosthetics,” Ellis said, explaining how state law exempts a list of things.

Ellis said most Wyoming businesses currently tax diapers and feminine hygiene products, considering them under state law as a “luxury.”

“However, I can tell you that these items are not luxury at all,” Ellis said. “For a woman to live with dignity, these items are often expensive and there have been numerous examples of people who have come to me who talk about the fact that, particularly for young girls if their parents don’t have funds, that it can be very difficult to get your hands on these products.”

Currently, 13 states exempt them entirely from taxation.

In 2018, females ages 18-24 were the largest demographic living in poverty, according to datausa.io, which pulls from U.S. Census Bureau data. That age range often encompasses women needing feminine hygiene products and mothers needing to purchase diapers for children.

“The cost (for feminine hygiene products) adds up, and it’s a unique cost that women bear,” Ellis said.

Following that demographic are men in the same age range, then females 25-34, who also may fall under the parenting demographic.

The bill also could have impacted elderly individuals who pay taxes on adult diapers.

“For those that have done elder care for a loved one, a grandparent, a parent, you know that purchasing diapers is very much a matter of dignity,” Ellis said. “A lot of people don’t like buying them altogether, but in the instances they have to, they’re very expensive. And unfortunately as I’ve seen with a lot of end-of-life cases, these things are hot commodities.”

The loss of tax revenue would result in a $939,000 reduction in Fiscal Year 2022 from the general fund and $903,000 in the local sources fund.

Sen. Tom James, R-Rock Springs, moved to amend the bill to gender neutralize it to include all hygiene products.

“If we make it to just feminine products, it doesn’t really encompass what our state is about and it segregates and favors one sex over the other,” James said. “I’m not saying what happens with women is not important and that type of thing, I just think that when it comes to hygiene, both sexes are necessary to have that hygiene maintenance.

“Guys with soaps and foot powder and all of that kind of stuff, we’re out working in the field, out in the mines, out in the oil field, wherever we work. I know it’s nowhere near what women go through, so it’s not a comparison, but we still have our hygiene products that we have to have as well,” he said.

The amendment failed 2-3, with James and Chair Sen. Cale Case, R-Lander, voting in favor. Those opposed to the amendment said the exemption of all hygiene products, due to the fiscal impact and lack of application for a need for feminine products for men, caused them to vote against it.

The fiscal impact of the bill cuts a large chunk out of statewide funding, and so Sens. Fred Baldwin, R-Kemmerer, and Stephan Pappas, R-Cheyenne, expressed concern over it passing on the floor of the Senate if it moved out of committee.

The bill failed 2-3 and will not move to the floor for the second legislative session in a row.

LYNDHURST, Ohio

Theft: Cedar Road

At 12:35 p.m. Jan. 20, police were called to Giant Eagle, 25105 Cedar Road at Legacy Village, where a woman had walked out of the store with a cart full of diapers for which she had not paid.

The woman was last seen walking north on Richmond Road. It was thought she may have just been released from a hospital, as she had a hospital band on her wrist.

Police located the woman, 32, of Cleveland, and took her back to the store, where the stolen goods were returned. The woman had stolen diapers worth a total of $80.70.

Police charged the woman with theft and issued her a trespass warning.

OVI: Mayfield Road

At 8:35 p.m. Jan. 24, an officer stopped a car for speeding and went on to discover that the driver, a Mayfield Heights man, 40, was intoxicated.

The man failed field sobriety tests and was found to have a blood-alcohol content of .202, above the state minimum for drunk driving of .08. Police charged the man with OVI and had his car towed.

Assist person: East Farnhurst Road

At 11:55 a.m. Jan. 24, a man, 36, reported that someone had forced entry from his garage’s man door into his house. Nothing was missing from the house.

The man, who is recently separated, suspected that his wife had entered the home. The woman, 33, had asked police the day before for an escort so that she could enter the house, as the man had changed the locks. She was told to come back when she was ready to enter the house and police would escort her.

The woman, 33, admitted that she had entered the house, but was not charged, as she is still a part owner of the home.

Family dispute: Rae Road

At 10:10 p.m. Jan. 22, a man, 26, reported that his brother, 35, was intoxicated and was throwing things about the house that the two share with their mother. Police requested an EMS squad be sent to the house to care for the intoxicated brother. No charges were filed.

Suspicious person: Aldersgate Drive

At 9:10 a.m. Jan. 18, a man called police from Florida to report that, the day before, a man impersonating a water department worker had gone to his elderly parents’ house. The caller requested that police speak with his parents about the incident.

Police learned that the suspect was not allowed into the couple’s home.

Shoreline police stations to collect diapers for those in need - WTNH.com

diapers.indah.link

BRANFORD, Conn. (WTNH)– We’ve talked a lot about food insecurity throughout the pandemic but diaper needs is also a growing concern for a lot of families. So, with that, police stations along the shoreline are coming together to collect diapers for the families who need them the most.

It’s the fourth year local departments have partnered with nonprofit Bare Necessities. Last year this diaper drive brought in nearly 30,000 diapers, but this year they’ve seen the demand grow.

“We’ve seen our numbers rise by 160% during Covid and they’re still rising. Normally this time of year our numbers go down, and they’re not,” said Tina Bascom, one of the founders of Bare Necessities.

It affects the health of the parent and baby, and your financial situation, too. No diapers means you can’t send your child to daycare, meaning you can’t go to your job. They’re trying to help families, and trying to get the word out.

“Awareness is key. It’s totally the only way we’re going to get out from under this,” said Bascom.

So here’s where you can bring donations:

  • Branford
  • Clinton
  • East Haven
  • Guilford
  • Madison
  • North Branford
  • Connecticut State Police – Troop F

You can drop off diapers and wipes at any of those police stations anytime of the day. That all kicks off Feb. 1 and runs through Feb. 15.

8-year-old best friends help collect nearly 10,000 diapers - KLUV

diapers.indah.link

Ellie Ambrose and Anna Tobin are both eight-years-old, in the second grade, and are the best of friends.

Their friendship was born after they each discovered a mutual affection for caring about others. Well, that caring has led to something incredible for the pair of second graders, as over this past winter break, they planned and organized a donation drive to help babies across DFW.

Ellie explained, "They can't do anything. They can just maybe crawl, and if they're too little, they might not even crawl. So, they do need help, and I think that's why we chose babies."

So, the best friends partnered with Community Partners of Dallas, a nonproft which supports the work of Child Protective Services in Dallas County to collect diapers, baby wipes, shampoo, lotion and other items. They asked for the help of family, friends, and even went to neighborhood houses armed with flyers and notes to spread the word.

Ellie said, "I went to neighbors' mailboxes and put my flyer in their boxes. So, that's how I helped." In her flyers, she wrote, "My friend and I want to help babies in need this year. Please help if you can. Love, Ellie."

After just two weeks, Ellie and Anna needed four SUVs to drop off all the items they collected at Community Partners, which included 9,652 diapers, 35,122 baby wipes, 117 baby shampoos, and 79 bottles of baby lotion amongst other items.

Joanna Clarke, Vice President of Development and Communications for Community Partners of Dallas, said of the girls' effort, "Ellie and Anna blew us away! Their planning, their hard work, their enthusiasm, their marketing. These girls worked so hard. And their hard work paid off. I'm blown away at all the amazing things they were able to collect."

Roanoke organization puts out plea for diaper donations - WSLS 10

diapers.indah.link

ROANOKE, Va. – The need for diapers lasts all year long, but it’s even greater due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Child Health Investment Partnership (CHIP) of the Roanoke Valley, or CHIP, put out a request on Facebook to ask for diaper donations.

A baby needs an average of 100 diapers a month and a third of families don’t have enough, according to the organization.

“Children that are in soiled diapers tend to have higher rates of abuse, higher rates of diaper infection, yeast infection, etc,” said the organization’s COO, Autumn Lavering. “So it is really critical for all families to have a healthy supply of diapers.”

So far, the organization has raised nearly $300.

To donate, you can either go to CHIP’s website or you can buy the diapers online and have them sent to CHIP’s office at 3rd St SW, Roanoke, Virginia 24016.

There’s also an Amazon Wish List you can buy them from.

New church-run diaper bank supports hundreds of babies and families across Racine and Kenosha - Journal Times

diapers.indah.link

KENOSHA — Ruth Dyson believes in getting to the bottom of things.

Specifically, she believes in making sure that all babies have the diapers they need.

Last fall, Dyson put together a nonprofit diaper bank to collect donations of diapers and deliver them to area social service agencies to put into the hands of families in need.

Headquartered at Lively Stone Church of God in Christ, 2313 Roosevelt Road, the Diaper Depot & More (facebook.com/diaperdepotnmore) has assisted approximately 470 Kenosha and Racine families so far, according to Dyson.

The agency began as an extension of the ministry work done by Dyson, known also as Lady Ruth Dyson. She and her husband, Pastor Bobby Dyson, founded the church several years ago.

Community involvement has long been Ruth Dyson’s mission. A Kenosha native, Dyson is a former two-term county supervisor who also worked with the University of Wisconsin Extension connecting families in need with community resources.

A way to help

Starting the diaper bank was another manifestation of Dyson’s ministry.

“I was trying to figure out how to help the community,” she said. “Some suggested I do a food pantry, but I wanted to help in another way.”

Dyson identified agencies she felt would benefit from support and sought out community partners — businesses and churches — to provide diapers and diapering supplies. She chose to set up a diaper bank rather than oversee individual client giveaways “to get the diapers to agencies that identify specific families in need.”

Established in September as the Lively Stone Diaper Bank, the organization was rechristened in December as the Diaper Depot & More.

“It’s been a really natural partnership that has allowed us to grow our diaper closet substantially,” said Erin Morey, director of operations for the Prevention Services Network.

Filling the bank

To stock the diaper bank, Dyson connected with area donor organizations.

One of the first to get on board was 1HOPE, a grassroots organization providing mentoring and foster family support for families in the Uptown area. The 1HOPE group facilitated the diaper bank’s initial deposit of 4,000 diapers, Dyson said.

St. Vincent de Paul stepped in with “a truckload” of diapers and baby ointment, she added.

1HOPE helped “spread the word” and connect Dyson to other church and community partners, said 1HOPE Executive Director Nicole Thomsen-Coughlin.

“When I heard of Ruth’s vision, I knew this was an important cause that the community could unite around,” Thomsen-Coughlin said.

Members of 1HOPE connected the Diaper Depot to Great Lakes Church, which has congregations in Kenosha and Racine.

The church rolled out an extensive diaper drive, complete with a YouTube video. The drive that began at the end of November netted some 10,000 diapers and 5,000 wipes, “enough to help over 400 families,” Dyson said.

Support Local Journalism

Your membership makes our reporting possible.

Once a month, Dyson drops off diaper bundles and wipes to each of the agencies.

“I ask (agencies) to let me know approximately how many they will need for their clients,” she said.

In the first week of January, Dyson delivered 4,000 diapers, wipes and ointments to the Racine Professional Women’s Network Services.

Families in need

The need for extra diapers and supplies is critical for many families, notes Dyson. In the video produced by Great Lakes Church, she said that many families fall short of at least 19 diapers each month.

To alleviate the shortfall, Dyson makes up donation bundles of 25 diapers each, repackaging larger donation packages as needed.

Currently, there is a need for diapers in sizes 6 and 7, Dyson said.

Although diaper donations are currently being stored at Lively Stone Church’s storefront location, Dyson expects to need commercial storage space in the near future.

Kenosha's Porche Bennett-Bey named Time Magazine's Guardian of the Year

Diaper Depot partners also include Kenosha social activist Porche Bennett-Bey. When she learned about Dyson’s diaper bank, Bennett-Bey instantly began to spread the word through the community and on social media.

“I love this because there are so many young moms that do not have the help,” she said.

In addition to basic diapering supplies, the Depot has received donations of other goods. During the holidays, the Nestle company, based in Burlington, donated 25 cases of Nesquik and five case of chocolate chips, which were donated to partnering agencies receiving diapers, Dyson said.

So far, the Diaper Depot’s services are getting rave reviews.

“It is a great addition to the (PSN) programming we are able to provide to families,” Morey said. “Ruth has been doing great things, and I only imagine there are more to come.”

“Ruth is such a real blessing,” agreed Bennett-Bey.

Dyson hopes more agencies can be served as more community partners get on board with supplies and/or diaper drives.

Cash donations for the purchase of diapers and wipes by the Diaper Depot are also encouraged, Dyson said.

“People can ‘adopt a family’ for $8,” she said.

Starting the first week in February, the organization is offering a baby-carriage-themed keychain gift with donations of $15 or more.

And while the Diaper Depot team is small, it is mighty.

“It’s a of work, but I enjoy it,” Dyson said. “The most rewarding part of what I do is knowing that babies will receive the resources they need to grow to become healthy babies.”
