Healthynest Has Just Launched the First-Ever EWG-Verified Diaper - The Bump

For the past three decades, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has worked to empower people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment and advocated for transparency in skincare, cosmetic and cleaning products. This year, they released a new category for a product that hasn’t had as much regulation as you might think: diapers, and today Healthynest is announcing the first ever EWG-verified diaper.

According to the EWG, diapers have historically not been regulated by the FDA, as they aren’t considered a medical device. Consequently, diaper manufacturers aren’t obligated to disclose their ingredients publicly or even test the safety of their products. However, newborn skin is thinner and more susceptible to exposure when it comes to harmful chemicals like dyes, chlorine and phthalates.

The new criteria set forth by the EWG requires controlled sourcing of raw materials; manufacturing processes to prevent contamination; and third-party testing for harmful substances, such as chlorine or elemental chlorine-free bleaching agents, parabens, phthalates, optical brighteners used to whiten, pesticides, fragrances, flame-retardant chemicals polyfluorinated chemicals, or PFAS.

“For decades, EWG has been at the forefront of the fight to safeguard children from exposure to toxic chemicals that harm their health,” said EWG President Ken Cook. “This commitment drove us to develop EWG-verified Baby Diapers. EWG-verified goes beyond basic ingredient information and holds companies to the highest standards for health and transparency…The EWG-verified diaper puts children’s health first.”

Now, EWG along with Healthynest—a new brand from Happy Family Organics’ founder Shazi Visram—will be launching the first EWG-verified diaper. The product has been almost three years in the making and been tested for over 900 chemical compounds. The EWG-verified diapers from Healthynest will be plant-based and made in a carbon neutral facility.

“At Healthynest, we’re dedicated to evolving and improving the baby care category so parents can have choices that perform while also supporting the absolute highest standard of safety and ethics,” Visram, who also helped shape the organic baby food category with her first company Happy Family. “As a parent focused on eliminating toxic exposure to our children, I have always been surprised by the lack of transparency in the diaper category, leading to unregulated material lists and leaving families with unanswered questions about the safety of such a key product in a baby’s life. Diapers are worn by a baby almost 24 hours a day while their brains are developing, and we as parents are creating a product that puts baby’s health first. We’ve spent the past two plus years developing the Healthynest diapers, and are so very proud to launch the first ever EWG-verified diaper that’s certified free of toxins and utilizes the latest and cleanest technology so that baby can have the very best."

To date, Healthynest’s diaper is the only product to meet EWG’s criteria. The hope is that stringent criteria will help streamline claims and create one standard for transparency.
