In this season of giving before she leaves office, State Representative Margo McDermed (R-Mokena) is once again proudly hosting her annual holiday diaper. The month long donation drive will begin next Wednesday, November 18th.
"Every year in office I have strived to help the community through annual events and drives like this one," Rep. McDermed said. "Unfortunately, because of the virus and the economic shutdowns, more of our neighbors are struggling than in years past." Since March, a total of 1,979,988 claims have been filed with the state, with 73,515 new unemployment claims coming during the week of October 26th according to Illinois latest jobs report. That week Illinois saw the second largest increase nationwide in unemployment claims.
Rep. McDermed continues to host this drive to address an under-served, but still very important, need in the community. More than 5 million children in the US live in poor or low-income families. On average, a newborn goes through about 360 diapers per month. Unfortunately, the so-called "diaper loophole" means that government assistance programs, like SNAP, don't cover diapers, which are essential to keep an infant or toddler clean, dry, and healthy. Cleanliness is essential to the physical and mental well-being of infants and contributes positively to their growth.
Donations will be collected at Rep. McDermed's district office via a dropbox outside the office, a safe method that requires no contact. Residents can also set up deliveries directly to the office from companies like Amazon.
Looking for diapers, diaper wipes, and rash cream, Rep. McDermed hopes, "to end my tenure in elected office, I really want to make this a successful drive that brings the community out and inspires us to help one another."
