Samira Wiley enters the world of Gilead every time she steps foot on the set of The Handmaid Tale. The Emmy-winning series—Wiley herself is a two-time nominee—is known for its brutal, chilling storylines and the unflinching bravery exhibited by the show’s central characters, including Wiley’s Moira.
This past season, now streaming on Hulu, fans have missed seeing Moira on screen with Elisabeth Moss’s character, June. The women were separated after Moira escaped Gilead to seek refuge in Canada, while June went deeper and deeper into her plans for a revolution in Gilead. In the May 19 episode, titled “Vows,” viewers finally witnessed a reunion of the two friends, but it wasn’t exactly a warm greeting. The chilliness could be felt on and off the screen—literally.
“The entire episode was filmed on a boat in the middle of Lake Ontario,” Wiley tells Glamour over the phone about the pivotal moment. “Every night it was cold and windy, and the boat was tiny—a lot of people got seasick."
It all made for a “really intense” dramatic episode, Wiley says. “I haven’t filmed scenes like that since season one, or possibly ever. Being reunited—just me—with Elisabeth on screen was something I’ve been waiting for this entire series, to get back to her, because she’s such an amazing actress. She makes me better. I do my best work being in a scene with her. So this episode is one I’m the proudest of in possibly the whole series. I’ve been waiting to really get to sink my teeth into it for Moira.”

My favorite way to decompress
I love to take a bath. It’s not something I always get to do because it takes a long time to run a bath. Especially right now, I do not have any time for any baths. All I have time for is giving my baby a bath. But one day I’m gonna get back to that. You got to put a bath bomb in there. It makes my skin feel softer, but honestly, the real reason is because they’re so cool to watch. I love them. They’re really fun.
A life-saving baby product
Honestly, the Coterie diapers changed our lives. They’re like the Rolls-Royce of diapers; I didn’t even know they make diapers like this. It’s funny because, why would anyone care about diapers? But in the past month, I’ve probably gone through over 300. There were at least 12 diapers a day…it’s wild. These go all the way up the upper back and are so soft. And they hold so much pee! They’re so awesome.
My days off include a lot of reality TV
I just started watching old seasons of Survivor, which, I mean, it’s been out for like 20 years and I’ve never seen it before. That’s been awesome. Also, I’m a little embarrassed, but I’ve watched almost every season of The Bachelor.
My sneaker collection
I know people have way bigger collections of shoes than I do, but I at least got somewhere between 90 to 100 pairs of tennis shoes. My Nike Blazers are really classic, and I think they’re the first basketball sneakers that Nike ever made—not that I play basketball. They look good on my feet, and I like high-tops.
My go-to outfit
I just started buying this pair of jeans from the brand Mnml. They make men’s jeans, so they kind of don’t fit me, but I’m really trying. I also buy a bunch of Calvin Klein shirts. They fit really well, and their black or white T-shirts go with everything.
What I wear around the house
Honestly, any kind of sweatpants and oversized-shirt combo. I really like big clothes because they’re so comfortable. Aerie makes Real Soft shirts…ugh, those are so comfortable.
My self-care ritual
There’s this clay mask that I like to put on sometimes that’s super cheap from Amazon. I really like the way my skin looks afterward, honestly. It kind of clunks up a lot and it’s a messy cleanup, but the results are worth it.
