The Eastern Iowa Diaper Bank announced new community days each month to provide diapers, wipes and pull-ups to any area parent.

Anyone from the community in need of these resources, regardless of whether they participate in the diaper bank program, can receive up to 50 diapers each month, officials announced this week.

“We know these days we are open to the community will help offset the cost of diapers for families who may be struggling make ends meet,” said Erin Langdon, Eastern Iowa Diaper Bank spokeswoman.

The first community diaper day is Wednesday from 3 to 6:30 p.m. at the diaper bank, 420 Sixth St. SE in Cedar Rapids. Diapers and other supplies will be distributed by drive-thru in the alley off Sixth Street SE.

A monthly supply of diapers costs $80 on average, and low-income families spend nearly 14 percent of their paychecks to diaper their children, according to diaper bank officials. It’s estimated 1 in 3 families nationwide struggle to afford diapers for their babies.

As a result of the derecho and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the need for diapers has increased, Langdon said, prompting officials to open the Eastern Iowa Diaper Bank to all community members in need last year.

In 2020, the bank distributed more than 650,000 diapers to families. The year before, the bank donated about 150,000 diapers.

The next community diaper day is scheduled from 3 to 6:30 p.m. June 30.

The diaper bank was established in 2016 through a partnership with YPN, the young family support network, and the Eastern Iowa Health Center, the Cedar Rapids-based federally qualified health center. HACAP — the Hawkeye Area Community Action Program — is now a partner agency of the bank.

Clients of those organizations can enroll in the program to earn free diapers and supplies for their children through well-check visits, finishing a YPN program or participating in other services offered by these nonprofits.
