This month, the Central New York Diaper Bank is encouraging monetary and physical diaper donations as part of the sixth annual "Make a Mother's Day" drive.
Organizers said half of the children living in Syracuse younger than age 5 live in poverty.
Diaper Bank representatives said too many families continue to live without an adequate supply of clean diapers for their kids. They said despite being essential, diapers are not covered by government assistance benefits, so the non-profit works with more than 35 community groups to distribute about 185,000 diapers to families in need each month.
Organizers said since the pandemic began last year, the need for diapers actually doubled. This month, any monetary donation you make will be matched.
"This May, we have a matching grant, so all contributions up to $10,000 will be matched. So, you'll have double the impact and help double the amount of babies and moms," said CNY Diaper Bank Founder and Director Michela Hugo.
This is a virtual diaper drive, so you're encouraged to visit CNYDiaperBank.org in order to make a monetary donation. You can also make a physical diaper donation at the Diaper Bank headquarters on Crossroads Park Drive in Liverpool 24 hours a day.
They put a donation box out last summer and will take regular and cloth diapers, as well as instant baby formula.
Since its inception in 2016, the CNY Diaper Bank has distributed more than three million diapers to families in need.
