SHORELINE — The Bare Necessities warehouse is chock full of diapers and wipes, ready to be distributed to families across the shoreline.

The latest donations are thanks to the 2021 Shoreline Law Enforcement Diaper Drive, which netted a total 61,907 diapers and 83,688 wipes. Donations included diapers, pullups, adult briefs and wipes.

In addition, over $4,000 in cash was donated that will go toward the purchase of additional diapers and wipes.

“It’s overwhelming,” said Tina Bascom, president of Bare Necessities, Inc.

“It is more than double than what they did last year,” she added.

The not-for-profit organization, Bare Necessities, provides diapers and wipes to local shoreline communities through food pantries, social service agencies and other community service agencies.

The organization has distributed more than 997,333 diapers and 1,216,335 wipes since its creation in November 2015.

Police departments in Branford, Guilford, Madison, Clinton, East Haven, North Branford, in addition to Connecticut State Police Troop F in Westbrook participated in the fourth annual diaper drive.

In addition, an Amazon account was created to order diapers and wipes to be sent directly to Bare Necessities.

This account remains open.

Orders can be placed by visiting the Bare Necessities, Law Enforcement Diaper Drive Wish List at amzn.to/3cme0kC.

The biggest demand is for size 4 – 6 diapers and Bascom said many of the Amazon orders included these items.

“We got way more sixes than we normally do,” she said. “It made us feel so good.

“We probably have enough sixes to get us through a month, which is great,” she added. “Normally we don’t have enough to get us through one pantry.”

The wipes are also especially appreciated at this particular time.

“We haven’t been able to distribute wipes since August because we haven’t been able to get the quantity we need at a price we can afford,” said Bascom.

She attributes the successful diaper drive on the commitment from the police departments.

“I think the police departments this year really got behind it, because they’ve seen the need in their communities grow,” Bascom said. “They’ve been out seeing it during COVID.”
