MARQUETTE –According to the National Diaper Bank Network, one in three families has difficulty affording enough diapers for their babies.

A new Marquette County community cause, Diaper Marquette County, works to increase awareness of diapering needs and collect donations of diapers and wipes for local families in need with the support of community partners.

The first drive, set for the month of April, will be held to support the Marquette County Community Baby Shower, which provides families who are expecting a new baby or have a new infant at home the opportunity to learn about community resources and receive needed baby items.

“While many families have faced challenges obtaining enough diapers and supplies to care for their babies, we anticipate that this need will continue to grow as families face economic hardship due to the pandemic,” said Melinda Britton, owner of Doulas of Marquette and founder of Diaper Marquette County, in a press release.

“Our goal is to partner with businesses and organizations throughout Marquette County to set up drop-off locations and then distribute donations to community organizations serving low-income families throughout Marquette County,” Britton said. “We are so happy to be able to support the Marquette County Community Baby Shower in providing diapers and wipes for local families in this way.”

“We are very excited to be part of the first spring diaper drive,” said Trecia Nickerson, co-chair of the Marquette County Community Baby Shower. “Diapers are a big expense, and this will help many families.”

Although Diaper Marquette County was started during the pandemic, organizers plan to coordinate bi-annual diaper drives for many years to come with the help of businesses and organizations throughout Marquette County. “We started receiving requests from families asking where they could find additional help and we did diaper drives every few years,” said Britton. “As a dedicated community cause,

Diaper Marquette County is excited to receive such wonderful community support and plans to host drives in the spring and fall each year.”

Business and organizations interested in becoming a community partner — either a drop-off location or an agency interested in receiving donations from future diaper drives — should contact Diaper Marquette County at diapermarquettecounty@gmail.com or call 906-869-0000.
