Challenges with a goal to 'make someone smile'

BUCYRUS - The Bucyrus Rotary Club president's efforts to help the community were rewarded with a face full of chocolate pudding earlier this month.

In an interview conducted by email, Ronda Scott said she issues monthly challenges to her organization's members as a way of getting them more involved.

In December, they met her challenge by winning an annual competition with the Bucyrus Kiwanis Club to raise more money in a single day of bell-ringing for the Salvation Army Red Kettle drive. Inspired by that success, she said, she decided to reach out to other local organizations.

Reaching out to others groups

"In January, I talked with Julie Rexroad of Wynford Interact to see if they wanted to enter into a friendly contest to see who could collect the most diapers," Scott said — they idea was to play off the New Year baby theme. The diapers would then be contributed to the Bucyrus Salvation Army.

"I suggested the loser get the dirty diaper (chocolate pudding) to the face; Julie suggested the winner get the diaper to the face as that would push each of our club members to try to get their respective leader 'smashed.'"

The Rotary club won, so at a club meeting on March 2, Cassandra Kurek, a ninth-grade member of the Wynford Interact Club, got to smash a chocolate pudding-filled diaper into Scott's face, according to Rexroad.

In all, more than 10,000 diapers were collected through the drive, Scott said, with the Wynford Interact Club contributing close to 4,000.

"Ten-thousand diapers is a lot of diapers," Scott said. "We filled the Salvation Army's van and it took us for what I thought was forever to get them all loaded. The Salvation Army will now distribute to local organizations and people in need. I know one of their first stops was going to be Voice of Hope Pregnancy Center."

Scott's challenges have continued.

Spreading positivity

In February, members were asked to spread positivity to leave cards she provided containing positive quotes around the community. On the back of each card was Rotary information, meeting time and date.

"I figured with monetary donations the previous two months, I better figure something out that wouldn't break the budgets," Scott said. She gave each member 10 cards to share. "The goal was to make someone smile or feel better about something; the back of the card with club info was simply bonus."

In March, she asked each member to do a kind deed for someone in the community.

"I have received reports that some have helped people with groceries in the store, some have given rides to appointments for neighbors and even strangers (yikes), and some have shared baked goods," Scott said.

Challenges for April and May in the works

She's still developing her challenges for April and May, but said they might involve outdoor service work. She's working with the garden club and scoping out the parks to see what they need.

For every month in which a member completes the monthly challenge, his or her name goes into a drawing.

"In June, at my last meeting of the year, I will draw the winner," Scott said. "I haven't decided on the grand prize yet. At first I had thought I would get a pass to the zoo or tickets to Community Concert (Crawford County Community Concert Association), but I'm thinking more that it should be a donation to their favorite charity or something like that. We'll see what I come up with by that date."
