A stockpile of diapers and pull-ups — some 6,500 in total — was collected by the Ladies, Ancient Order of Hibernians, in Bristol last month and delivered to the Catholic Social Services of Bucks County's Family Service Center in Tullytown.
Brianna Curran of the Irish-American cultural and service organization said the group received donations during its drive over the weekend of Jan. 23-24. "We advertised in our community and advertised to the Bristol Borough community," she said. "People either donated items or made monetary donations and we went shopping."
Catholic Services runs a diaper pantry 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursdays out of its Family Service Center, 100 Levittown Parkway. Diapers are distributed free to Bucks County residents in need, but recipients are required to register for an appointment due to the COVID pandemic and to alert staff to which size or sizes they need.
Teri Mitchell, center administrator, said that Catholic Services distributes about 8,000 diapers for infants and children a month and currently is helping about 100 families. The center has seen a continuing 30% increase in requests for assistance since the pandemic began.
"Size 5 and 6 for older children are always in need, if anyone wants to make a donation," Mitchell said. "Bucks County is a very generous community."
The pantry also gives out baby shampoo and baby wash when there are supplies available.
Mitchell said the organization also is now offering its courses for pregnant women and new parents online, including instructional programs on issues in pregnancy as well as the installation and use of a car seat, safety in bathing an infant, and sleep safety.
Those who register have chances to win baby equipment. It also will host an online baby shower on March 24, with registration required by March 23. Call 215-945-2550 to register for the shower or courses.
Catholic Services also runs the Mary's Cupboard food pantry, which is open three days a week: 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Monday and 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday and Friday. It distributes non-perishable food and toiletries supplies. Registration is required due to the pandemic. For more information, call 215-949-1991.
