HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Kaitlin Hughes of Hillsborough is one busy and amazing woman. A mother of four children with a full-time job and two part-time jobs, Hughes still manages to find time to pursue her passion for sewing and her business of crafting cloth diapers.
"I love to sew and sell about 40 diapers a month. It is a lot for me and takes up all of my time. There are a lot of late nights. Aside from sewing, I also take pictures of my products and have people model stuff…. So it is time-consuming. It really does take up all you could put into it, but it is so worth it," said Hughes, who created Little Skivvies.
Hughe's passion for sewing began after the birth of her third child in December 2018.
She had wanted to cloth diaper her older two kids but it didn't happen at the time. With her third, she was paying a lot of money for custom-made diapers and the quality was really not what she expected.
"Then it dawned on me, if someone else is selling them I thought I know I can sew better than that," said Hughes. "I am a pretty determined person and I was already looking for another way to make money."
Hughes, who had never sewed anything before, decided to teach herself. She learned in May 2019 and Little Skivvies was born.
It takes Hughes about an hour to sew one diaper. That hour is usually interrupted with a full house but she gets it done with the help of her husband John.
Hughes has plenty of unique prints, sizes, and cuts available on her site. Additionally, she can make custom diapers as well.
Hughes says cloth diapering has its benefits including being "much more affordable" in the long run with four kids.
"We were spending maybe $300 to $500 for cloth diapers that we can reuse for subsequent children. In disposables, we were paying thousands of dollars. We saved tons of money doing this," said Hughes.
Additionally, Hughes said cloth diapering is much better for the environment.
