Just because the stork doesn’t really deliver babies, doesn’t mean a truck resembling a stork can’t deliver baby supplies.
The vehicle, designed by Laguna Beach artist Roark Gourley features a stork’s neck and head jutting from above the cab, and wings floating above clouds on the sides.
The baby-themed truck is being used by the Community Action Partnership’s Orange County Diaper Bank to deliver supplies to its partner agencies who then give them to families.
Natalie Anderson, manager of the Diaper Bank, said the group “wanted something that was happy and cheerful” to continue the diaper program that was started in March. She said 3 million diapers have been delivered this year through a combination of donations and state funding.
The whimsical truck has been named Tom Tom, after state Sen. Tom Umberg and Assemblyman Tom Daly, who helped secure funding for the program in the California budget.
Diapers are the “No. 2 request” after food, even more so in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, said Gregory Scott, president and CEO of the Community Action Partnership. “When you have high unemployment, you have high food insecurity, and you have diaper insecurity, if there is such a term.”
