BRANFORD — The idea was to be tops for bottoms.
The challenge, sent out on Facebook, was to collect items for the shoreline Diaper Bank.
It worked.
Residents Courtney Rosenberg and Cheryl Andresen recently packed $955.14 worth of diapers into the Diaper Bank outside the Patricia C. Andriole Community Service Center on Harrison Avenue.
The delivery, the first of two, was the result of a Venmo challenge issued to the women of their Facebook group.
In all, they raised $2,150, including a $1,000 matching donation from the Branford Community Foundation and a $50 gift card from Walmart. There, they filled six carts with every size of diaper, drawing quizzical looks from their fellow shoppers, they said.
“Diapers aren’t considered a basic need by supplemental federal and state assistance programs,” said Rosenberg, formerly the volunteer coordinator at CDR.
“We’re so happy to be able to do our small part in helping to fill this need,” she said.
The Diaper Bank is open on the second Tuesday of every month during the Community Dining Room’s Tuesday Night Family Dinner. It’s available to any Branford resident. There is no income qualification needed.
Branford families can apply for assistance from the Diaper Bank by contacting BELC director Diane Pappacoda at 203-488-4512.
