Most parents have at one point or another found themselves out with their baby, and realizing that they haven't brought along the most essential baby supply: diapers. While certain circumstances can allow for a quick return home to stock up, if you find yourself far from home, you might need to get creative with your backup plan. This is definitely a new parents rite of passage, as everyone has experienced the, 'oh no! I forgot diapers!' moment at least once! Not to worry, BabyGaga has you covered! Here are the best ways to avoid catastrophe when you are out without diapers, and baby needs a change.
Hit The Store
The most logical first step is to go into a shop and buy a new pack of diapers, if you find yourself out without supplies and needing them. If you have a stroller with you, this should not be a big deal to tuck a pack of diapers under the carriage for storage afterwards. You will pretty much need an endless supply of diapers as long as your baby is still young enough to need them, so the investment won't be wasted. You might even decide to keep a permanent supply of diapers in your stroller, so that you always have a backup and don't have to pack them every time you leave the house.
Let Them Go Commando
If your baby really needs to get out of a dirty diaper, and you don't have any on hand, you can temporarily allow them to go diaper-less to prevent a nasty diaper rash. Only do this if you have wipes on hand, or are able to make it to a changing room table to access water and changing supplies. You can clean your baby up and wrap them in a blanket while you get to your destination. Clearly, this method can't guarantee that your baby won't go again, but hopefully it buys you a bit of time until you get home or to a location where you can access more diapers. It's always good for infants to have a little breather from diapers once and awhile, so this can have some unexpected benefits for their skin!
Make A DIY Diaper
If you're out without diapers and you might not be able to access any for awhile, you might need to get creative with your backup plan. A temporary homemade diaper can be made out of various items in your diaper bag, as long as they are clean! This is essentially what reusable diapers are, so it's not a big issue if you child doesn't have a Pampers for a few hours. Many parents stock a muslin blanket or swaddle in their diaper bag, and these can be folded and wrapped around your baby to protect from them having an accident in the stroller. If you have childproof safety pins in your bag, you can secure the muslin at each side of your baby's hips to prevent it from sliding down. Alternately, you can even make a big knot on each side, since the muslin cloths are usually quite large. Avoid using fabrics that can be irritating to your child's skin (aka: no jean diapers, please!). Stick to cotton, breathable fabrics that will not cause a bigger issue.
Ask A Stranger For A Diaper
Everyone knows that raising babies takes a village, and this is a great opportunity to ask a fellow parent for help. If you are out in public, chances are, you will see quite a few moms and dads strolling their babies. There is no shame in asking a fellow parent to help you out by sparing a diaper. Let's face it, most parents with babies of their own will be sympathetic and kind. Everyone is guilty of forgetting to pack an essential item from time to time, and it's better to ask a stranger than to let you baby sit in a dirty diaper for a prolonged period of time! Try to gauge the size of baby against your child's to make sure the diaper size is a good fit before approaching!
No matter what way you choose to deal with the no-diaper scenario, forgetting diapers does not make you a bad parent. So many moms will feel immense guilt after an incident like this, but remember, this is totally a human error, and moms are already functioning on less sleep and logic than the rest of the population. Go easy on yourself, and try to see the humor in the situation!
