Theft: After selecting multiple pieces of merchandise at a store in the 3800 block of Northlake Boulevard, a man decided to skip the payment portion of the shopping experience and pushed his cart out of one of the store’s exits. Seeing that the man had missed the key portion of the transaction, one of the store’s loss prevention associates tried to detain him. Instructed to follow him back inside to await police, the thief said he didn’t have to and began walking away, leaving the more than $700 worth of stolen merchandise behind. He then broke into a run, jumped into his van and raced away. With a description of the vehicle, police quickly located the van and attempted to pull it over. The perpetrator ignored the flashing lights and siren and tried to escape. A set of stop sticks were used to disable the vehicle on the southbound ramp to Interstate 95 from Northlake Boulevard. The man was arrested and eventually charged with retail theft and fleeing and eluding. He was taken to the county jail.

Theft: With a possibly serious hankering for some margaritas, a man stole four bottles of tequila from a store in the 1400 block of U.S. 1. The alcohol was worth more than $175. The manager, who was able to describe the man and his vehicle in detail to police, said the same man and an accomplice stole an entire case of vodka the week before.

Theft: After taking his sister’s new bicycle and leaving it outside a store in the 5500 block of Military Trail, the brother returned to find it had been stolen. The siblings’ mother informed police that she had bought the bicycle for $200. Though she did not have a serial number, she was able to provide police with a picture which was entered into evidence. The store had surveillance cameras, but none were aimed at the bicycle rack.

Vehicle burglary: Leaving her purse in plain sight in her vehicle, a woman locked the doors and went to a nearby fast-food restaurant. When she returned she discovered that one of the van’s windows had been smashed and her purse, a backpack and her work computer had been stolen. Her bag and its contents, the backpack and her computer were worth more than $3,000. A search was made of the area to see whether there were any surveillance cameras with negative results.

Theft: Noticing three women leaving a store in the 1800 block of West Indiantown Road in a hurry while carrying baskets of merchandise, a witness managed to get the license plate number of their car. The vehicle was spotted and stopped a short distance away at the intersection of Island Way and Indiantown Road. The items, which included six packages of diapers, 37 containers of deodorant and 16 packages of laundry detergent, were worth more than $600. The merchandise was recovered and two of the women were arrested and later taken to the county jail. The third female was a juvenile. The car was impounded.

Burglary: Claiming there had been a water leak at the residence above her’s, a man was allowed entry into a home on Doolen Court to "check for water damage." Once inside, the man looked under the sinks in the kitchen and bathroom. He then proceeded to the bedroom where he helped himself to several pieces of jewelry on top of a dresser. When the elderly woman attempted to stop him, he shoved her and said "(expletive) off" before running out of the residence. Informed of what had just happened, a neighbor called 911 for her and police were given a description of the thief and the vehicle he was driving. Working with officers from another municipality, the vehicle was spotted and stopped on I-95. The stolen items, which were worth thousands of dollars, were recovered. The man was arrested and charged with burglary, theft of a person 65 or older and battery on a person 65 or older. As he was being arrested, he spontaneously offered to give police information about a gypsy family and their crimes. He was taken to the county jail.

Drugs: Acting nervous after being pulled over near the intersection of Northlake Boulevard and U.S. 1 for a traffic violation, a woman was asked whether everything was OK and whether there was anything she wanted to tell the officer about. After hesitating for a bit, the woman said "No." When asked a second time, however, she said she had "a pipe." She then pulled the pipe from her bra where it had been concealed. The clear pipe had brown residue on it and Chore Boy stuffed inside. She was arrested on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia and released with a notice to appear in court. She was also given a warning for the traffic infraction.

Martin County Sheriff’s Office

Drugs: During a traffic stop on Kanner Highway at the southbound ramp to I-95, a deputy noticed how the 46-year-old driver was exceedingly nervous. He appeared to be hiding a small backpack between him and the door. When informed that a K-9 officer would be arriving to search for drugs, the driver admitted to possessing a small amount of heroin in his backpack. The man was arrested and taken to the county jail.

Disorderly intoxication: While a traffic stop was being conducted in the 1600 block of Southeast Federal Highway in Stuart, a man stumbled onto the scene. He had bloodshot eyes, poor balance and the smell of an alcoholic beverage on him. A deputy warned him not to interfere, and the man walked away several feet and then stood to observe. He then moved closer to where the investigation was taking place and was arrested. Once handcuffed, he 23-year-old began to scream obscenities. He was taken to the county jail, where a breath test confirmed that he was intoxicated.

Armed robbery: A man dressed in a tropical shirt, shorts and flip flops was walking back and forth in front of a restaurant in the 1800 block of Northeast Jensen Beach Boulevard in Jensen Beach. He was carrying a knife and a backpack. When deputies arrived, the man ran off but was soon apprehended. A deputy spoke to a man at the scene who had a 6-inch laceration on his arm that was bleeding. He told the deputy that the knife-wielding man tried to steal his bicycle, and cut him when he tried to stop the theft. Asked for his version of events, the 20-year-old knife-wielding man claimed that the bike owner came at him aggressively, so he was defending himself. He said he later threw the knife into the bushes. Witnesses corroborated the victim’s story. The knife-wielding man was arrested on multiple charges and taken to the county jail.

St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office

Unsafe storage of firearm: A report of gunfire brought a deputy to the 2800 block of Sheraton Boulevard in Fort Pierce. He saw three males standing next to a car occupied by two males. One of two in the car was a juvenile. On the floorboard of the back seat, in plain view, were two handguns. Both were loaded with a round in the chamber. All five males at the scene denied ownership of the firearms. The 19-year-old in the car was arrested and taken to the county jail. His juvenile companion was taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice.

Disturbance: The manager of a motel in the 7900 block of South U.S. 1 in Port St. Lucie reported a disturbance caused by a guest and asked assistance in removing him. A deputy went to the room where the noise came from and told the occupants they had to leave. Several left, but one man refused to go until he got his money back. The deputy told him he would have to take up the matter with the business owners at another time. Although the deputy warned him he would be arrested, the man would not budge and used a racial epithet toward the deputy. The 30-year-old man was arrested and taken to the county jail.

Battery on a law enforcement officer: Residents in the area of Las Olas Lane in Port St. Lucie reported the erratic behavior of a shirtless man in their neighborhood. A deputy found the 56-year-old standing in a driveway, talking to the backyard. The man, who also was staring up into the sky, claimed he was outside reading his Bible and drinking tea. When told his behavior was disturbing the neighbors, the man agreed to quiet down but as the deputy was about to leave, the man stood on a patio chair, threw his arms out to the side, looked into the sky and began to scream. Backup deputies arrived to help subdue the man, but he balled his fists and swung at them, striking three. He continued to actively resist but was eventually handcuffed. Fire rescue arrived and took the man to an area hospital.

Fort Pierce Police

Resisting officer: Police were called to a hotel in the 7100 block of Okeechobee Road, where a guest refused to leave. The 52-year-old woman, unable to pay for an additional night when her credit card was declined, went to her room and locked the door. She refused to answer when management came knocking. She also ignored an officer and a maintenance employee who came to the door. Eventually the latter managed to open the door, but had to break the deadbolt. The woman was sitting on the bed, laughing and smoking a cigarette. As the officer attempted to take her into custody, the woman fought him off. She kicked him in the groin several times, then grabbed his radio and ripped it off his vest. The officer managed to subdue her and escorted her out of the room. Backup officers arrived, the woman was arrested and taken to the county jail.
