Manchester High School group to hold diaper drive Friday - Journal Inquirer

MANCHESTER — A collection drive organized this week by Manchester High School students will focus on a lesser talked about but very important household item: diapers.

The Gentle Love Diaper Pantry of Manchester, created by Manchester High School student Kyle Zingler with the help of a few of his peers, is hosting a diaper collection drive from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21, in the high school’s Summit Street parking lot. All diapers collected will be donated to the Manchester Public School’s Welcome Center to be distributed to families in need.

Zingler, who is entering his junior year of high school, said he was exploring ways he could create a service project to benefit the community when he came up with the idea.

Zingler said that his mother, who works for the Vernon school system, was having trouble tracking down diapers for families she works with after the COVID-19 pandemic began in March. With high costs combined with inventory concerns at the start of the pandemic, Zingler realized diapers were something local families were struggling to find and stockpile for the weeks ahead.

“Even for people who have the financial means to go out and get diapers, they couldn’t even find diapers,” Zingler said. “So, for low-income families, it was nearly impossible for them to get their hands-on diapers.”

After coming up with the idea, Zingler reached out to a few of his friends to help create Gentle Love Diaper Pantry, which he said is completely youth-run and led. The organization has already held two drives in Manchester so far, collecting more than 30,000 diapers and 26,000 sanitary wipes through those efforts. The organization works with several social service groups in the area to distribute these items to families, including MACC Charities, ECHN’s Family Development Center, and the school system’s Welcome Center.

For Friday’s drive, diapers in sizes 4, 5, and 6 are especially needed. Those unable to attend the drive but who would like to contribute can check out the organization’s Amazon Wishlist online or email questions and comments to gentlelovedp
