The second “Food, Diaper and Book Drive” will be held on Aug. 6 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Cameron Park library according to Marni Price, the Early Childhood Literacy Specialist at the library. The event is open to all El Dorado County families in need of such basic supplies as diapers, wipes, educational activities and food. Items are free and registration is not required.

Sponsored by the Placer Food Bank, El Dorado Community Foundation, First-5 El Dorado Commission and the El Dorado County libraries, the event is the second of a series in order to assist county families. The first distribution in Cameron Park was held on June 22, with a total of 232 individuals who received the services. Many were first time participants in the program and according to Price, expectations are that the number of those served will increase. “We plan to have this drive the first Thursday of each month.”

Mary Schoenberger, associate director of programs for the Placer Food Bank, stated that “With the prolonged COVID-19 crisis, hunger is increasing. Placer Food Bank is here to focus on hunger relief throughout El Dorado, Nevada and Placer counties. The partnership we are developing will assist us in our goal to serve those in need.”

The event, a “drive-through,” is coordinated by the library’s Hub program, a partnership of county services (Health and Human Services and the County Office of Education); First-5 (a non-profit organization); and El Dorado County libraries.

According to Price, each library Hub “offers activities and programs for families with children ages 0-18 supported by a team of specialists.”

Library staff collaborate with the various professionals thus optimizing the resources available to the community. The distribution of food and other items speaks to the need experienced by many county residents.

Kathleen Guerrero (First 5 El Dorado Commission) described the situation by saying, “Families are struggling to make ends meet. Food, diapers, cleaning supplies and learning materials can all help ease the monthly budget and hopefully, the family stress. We want our community to know we are here for them.”

Families interested in the drive-through event are welcome to pull up to the library curb-side on Thursday, Aug. 6, 2020, from 10:30 a.m. to noon for a no-contact delivery of food, diapers and learning materials. Cameron Park library is located at 2500 County Club Drive in Cameron Park. No registration is required and all items are free of cost. For more information call or text the community Hub team at (866) 332-4827.
