Diaper drive being held in November - Columbus Telegram

diapers.indah.link
Diaper drive

Pictured are donations from Rock Bottom Towing's diaper drive held last year. It will be held again starting Nov. 1.

A Platte County family-run business is hosting a drive starting next week for an essential need often overlooked – diapers.

Rock Bottom Towing is hosting its second annual diaper drive during the month of November.

“Donations can be dropped off at Columbus Motor Company (2806 23rd St.) through the whole month of November,” said Sarah Cunningham, who owns Rock Bottom Towing with her husband. “Otherwise, we’re going to have two Fill the Van events… they’re (Columbus Motor Company) going to provide a van and people can just drive in and drop off diaper donations. No contact, they don’t have to get out of their vehicle.”

The Fill the Van dates are Saturday, Nov. 7 and Friday, Nov. 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days. The diapers will be donated to the Platte County Food Pantry.

“We hope to be able to fill the van both times, but if it takes us two times, that’s fine,” Sarah said.

According to Sarah, families can experience diaper insecurity similar to how others can have food insecurity.

“This is not normally something I’ve seen held around the Columbus area,” Sarah said. “That’s why we started these diaper drives - because diapers are an essential need for families in addition to food. People don’t think to donate diapers.”

Sarah’s daughter, Elisabeth, assisted with helping kick off the drive’s first year in 2019.

Elisabeth said she previously worked for a nonprofit where she saw the complications of parents not being able to afford diapers for infants and toddlers.

Your membership makes our reporting possible.

For example, Elisabeth said, parents may have to stretch out the use of their child’s diaper, meaning that the child stays in the diaper longer than needed. If a young child doesn’t have a diaper, he or she will not be allowed into day care or preschool, she noted, meaning that the parent has to stay home and that may cause problems at work.

Additionally, she noted possible medical issues of overusing diapers, such as infections.

“The problem is that people don’t realize how far it spirals out of control...” Elisabeth said. “Also, they may prioritize food over diapers often, you know, would you rather eat ... over supplying diapers.”

Elisabeth’s parents came up with the idea of a diaper drive and she assisted with helping get the word out.

“My dad, he really wanted to do something that was overlooked,” Elisabeth said. “Of course you can do a food drive, of course, you can do a coat drive … he just felt like there was such a need … for diapers.”

Last year, 500 packages of diapers were donated to the inaugural event which was then given to the Simon House, Sarah said. She said she hopes to triple that number this year.

“Especially this year in 2020 with the pandemic, the increased need and the increased issues with food insecurity, there is just as much increased need for diaper insecurity,” she added.

Sarah said that last year, they were able to host events at local grocery stores in which they would tell customers who came in about the drive. Customers then had the option of picking up a package of diapers during their shopping trip.

“Unfortunately, we can’t do that this year because of the COVID. We’re hoping to get the word out enough that people will still donate,” Sarah said.

“A lot of people are doing online ordering now. Hopefully, they’ll hear about the diaper drive and add a package of diapers to their online order, receive their order and bring it to our Fill the Van event.”

Global Adult Diaper Market Trend, Overview & Industry Analysis, and Regional Forecast, 2020-2030 - Eurowire

Adult Diaper Market: Smart Adult Diapers Efficient Product to Manage Incontinence Issues

Smart diapers are proving to be a game changer in the hygiene space. With global sales in the adult diaper market totaling ~8.2 billion in 2018, the introduction of smart diapers can boost the overall growth of the adult diaper market, with estimated sales of ~USS 15.6 billion worth of adult diapers in the year 2027.

Unchanged diapers increase the risk of skin problems, including diaper rash, as many caregivers are unsure regarding the right time to change diapers. To address this issue, manufacturers in the adult diaper market are developing smart diapers with wearable sensor technology. This technology alerts the caregiver regarding when the diaper needs to be changed, and prevents the risk of skin problems. Effective prevention of skin problems saves a lot of time, money, and resources of the healthcare industry, as well as individual consumers.

Wearable sensor technology in adult diapers serves as an effective management technique, addressing the growing incidence of adult incontinence. As such, manufacturers in the adult diaper market are innovating on micro disposable hook fasteners that are gentle on the skin. These fasteners prevent leakages in diapers, and are integrated with sensors, which serves as an efficient product for consumers.

Adult Diaper Market: Sustainable Value Chain Contributes Toward Circular Economy

The development of environmental-friendly and compostable adult diapers is contributing towards the motive of a circular economy. These plant-based diapers not only reduce environmental footprint, but also improve the skin health of patients and individuals. Manufacturers in the adult diaper market are developing compostable pads that are suitable for recycling through commercial composting. Besides, the belts, wraps, and pants of the diapers can be reused, which contributes towards a sustainable value chain.

Compostable adult diapers support the development of nutrient-rich compost. This compost is abundant with organic elements, and is used by the agriculture industry to replace chemical fertilizers. Manufacturers in the adult diaper market are collaborating with commercial composters to turn waste into a cost-efficient resource for compost, so as to cultivate raw materials such as cotton pulp used to develop adult diapers. Thus, manufacturers are preventing the accumulation of large volumes of waste diapers in landfills by converting them into a useful resource to develop organic compost.

Flushable Diapers Reduce Burden of Caregivers in Healthcare Industry

Manufacturers in the adult diaper market are constantly reinventing their diapers to ease the load of caregivers and healthcare providers. The ministries of land and infrastructure in various countries are also strategizing on a roadmap that transforms the development of adult diapers.

New innovations in adult diapers have led to the development of flushable diapers that significantly reduce the burden of sanitary care in nursing homes and hospitals. For example, a country such as Japan, which has an increasing portion of graying society, is benefitted with the advantages of such flushable diapers.

However, the increasing use of incontinence products poses a huge burden for the efficient disposal of large volumes of odorous diapers on an everyday basis. The crushing of used diapers and flushing them down in special drain pipes doesn’t serve as an effective alternative, as certain particles take years to decompose. As such, technology companies are striving to develop prototypes of an equipment that can help separate excrement from adult diapers for effective disposal.

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - A “Fill The Cruiser” diaper drive was held Thursday in Pittsfield.

It’s the 2nd annual drive which took place at Bud’s Shop and Save.

The Pittsfield Police Department teamed up with the Somerset County Sheriffs Department to make the drive possible.

Their purpose is to help out local families in need.

“We do it to help out because we care about people. We’re teamed up with the community, the business community, and the community members, and we work together as a team. We’re trying to help people who need a little extra help,” said Pittsfield Police Chief, Pete Bickmore.

“I went to Walmart this morning and bought a little over two thousand-one hundred diapers and brought them this afternoon to help the community,” says Michael Lynch, a donor to the event.

It’s not to late to donate.

You can still stop by the Pittsfield Police Department any time to drop off diapers.

Diaper need: The silent crisis intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic - Baptist News Global

diapers.indah.link

Before the pandemic, 1 in 3 families across the U.S. struggled to afford diapers. Now, with more than 56 million families with children losing their household income since March of this year, diaper banks trying desperately to assuage escalating demands are struggling to fill the need.

An often-hidden product of poverty, diaper need affects the physical, mental and economic welfare of children and families. The National Diaper Bank Network estimates that, at minimum, diaper banks are distributing monthly 50% more diapers to families in need than before COVID-19. Numerous more programs have reported surges of more than 400% to 500%. Programs in major cities are projecting that their respective diaper banks will distribute in excess of 2 to 7 million diapers by the end of 2020.

From the onset of the pandemic, diaper banks throughout the U.S. have pivoted and continued to adapt their distribution models. Many have shifted to drive-through and mobile diaper distributions in their communities. However, given the economic indicators for the fall and winter, it is expected that the unprecedented demand on diaper banks will continue without falter.

Why is there a need?

Troy Moore, chief of external affairs for the National Diaper Bank Network, explained that federal programs that low-income families rely on to help them pay for groceries —Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and the Women, Infants and Children  Program — do not cover the cost of diapers. “In most of the country, diaper banks are the only option for families struggling with diaper need.”

Many parents across the country who are already struggling to afford basic living costs such as food and rent simply are unable to afford the high cost of an adequate supply of diapers for their children. A newborn baby can go through 12 diapers a day; an adequate supply can cost from $70 to $100 per month.

According to the Center for Economic and Policy Research, the poorest 20% of Americans buying diapers are spending nearly 14% of their post-tax income on diapers. Without transportation, purchasing diapers at an inner-city convenience store rather than a large retailer can double or triple the monthly cost for diapers; and in poor and low-income families scrambling to allocate limited income, a baby can spend a day or longer just in one diaper, leading to a multitude of potential health and abuse risks.

This accounts for 5 million children aged 3 or younger living in low-income families across the U.S. Providing diapers to families eliminates $4.3 million in medical costs due to reductions in both incidences and days of diaper rash.

The ripple effects of not having diapers

Low-income parents were most often unable to take advantage of free or subsidized child care if they couldn’t afford to leave disposable diapers at child care centers.

Even before the virus, low-income parents were most often unable to take advantage of free or subsidized child care if they couldn’t afford to leave disposable diapers at child care centers. If parents cannot access day care, then they are rendered less able to attend work or school on a consistent basis. This in turn leads to increased economic instability and a continuation of the cycle of poverty only exacerbated during the pandemic.

Being unable to provide the basic materials for one’s children can cause what Myra Jones-Taylor calls a “cascading effect.” Taylor, chief policy officer for Zero to Three, a nonprofit focused on the well-being of infants and toddlers, is a member of a national group responsible for tracking emotional wellness during the spread of COVID-19 through a weekly survey conducted by the University of Oregon. From the beginning of April, Taylor and other researchers surveyed 2,400 caregivers covering a wide socioeconomic scope. They discovered that when caregivers report financial and material troubles, they also experience emotional distress within a week. According to Taylor, in turn, the “caregiver emotional distress is linked to child emotional distress.”

Advocating for changes in public policy to meet the material basic necessities of low-income families, particularly in communities populated by Black, Indigenous and persons of color, is vital to addressing and combatting diaper need. The nonprofit sector alone cannot provide all the material basic necessities that children and their families need to prosper. Broad support from the government, companies and communities is required.

Seeking solutions

Rainbow Push Coalition partnered with the National Diaper Bank Network and its member diaper bank programs to run community-wide diaper drives and diaper distribution events. They also partnered in National Diaper Need Awareness Week, which was most recently held Sept. 21-27, to engage with state and national elected officials to collect, repackage and distribute diapers in local communities. The event offers individuals, organizations, communities and elected officials opportunities to engage in real conversations and fundamental actions to help end diaper need.

Last year, Reps. Rosa DeLauro (Ct.) and Barbara Lee (Calif.) introduced HR1846 the End Diaper Need Act of 2019, which they continue to push today. This year, Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman (N.J.), Rosa DeLauro (Ct.) and Barbara Lee (Calif.) introduced the Improving Diaper Affordability Act during National Diaper Need Awareness Week to make the purchase of diapers tax-free.

A bipartisan request for $200 million in emergency funding to support diaper distribution programs remains on hold as negotiations on a new COVID relief package have stalled.

Currently, a bipartisan request led by Sens. Murphy (D-Conn.) and Ernst (R-Iowa) for $200 million in emergency funding to support diaper distribution programs remains on hold as negotiations on a new COVID relief package have stalled in Washington.

And now, even as programs like SNAP or WIC do not currently provide adequate funds for buying diapers, the recent attempt by the Trump administration to end food stamp benefits for nearly 700,000 unemployed people reflects a pattern of illogical, obtuse government action regarding federal assistance programs. This move, however, was struck down and condemned by a federal judge on Sunday, Oct. 18.

Chief U.S. District Judge Beryl A. Howell of Washington, D.C., condemned the Agriculture Department in a scathing 67-page opinion, for neither addressing nor justifying the impact of such a sweeping change which “radically and abruptly alters decades of regulatory practice, leaving states scrambling and exponentially increasing food insecurity for tens of thousands of Americans.” The judge concluded that the department’s failure to confront the issue renders the agency action “arbitrary and capricious.”

The need continues to escalate

While progress oscillates, efforts labor, demands soar, and negotiations in Washington remain stalled, children and their families suffer. Diapers are not a luxury, but an essential material that is becoming trivialized in the competition between human necessities, thus, increasingly difficult to afford — even before the pandemic.

Kelley Massengale of the National Diaper Bank Network says the problem isn’t how much existing diaper banks are utilized but rather the amount of resources available. Diaper need is a major public health concern impacting infant health, parental stress and families’ abilities to fully participate in society. Massengale says: “We need federal, state and local policies that address diaper need. It can take time to implement such policies. In the meantime, diaper banks need increased support so that they can continue serving their communities and grow to serve others.”

Pampers New Line Of Pure Diapers Includes A Plant-Based Liner — FIRST LOOK - Romper

diapers.indah.link

Parents with children in diapers who are in the market for a more natural diaper option can now lean on a brand they recognize. The new Pampers Pure diapers with plant-based materials are now available at major retailers and online, and they feature a plant-based liner infused with shea butter to help moisturize and protect your baby's skin. Plus, they're manufactured without some of the harsh chemicals and bleaching processes other diapers use. It's a new option for parents whose babies may have sensitive skin, or moms and dads who just try to be extra conscious about what's in their baby's food, toys, and other products.

Pampers conducted a survey which found that around 75% of parents are passionate about the materials that go into their baby's diapers, so this new product focuses on cleaning up that ingredient list (while, you know, still keeping little bums nice and dry). Now, Pampers Pure has the only diaper available with a plant-based liner inside, which is enriched with shea butter to help protect your baby's skin. The outer covering is made of cotton and other soft, natural fibers. The diapers are made without the usual chlorine bleaching process, and are free of fragrance, parabens, natural rubber latex, and 26 other potential allergens.

These new diapers also come in cute, quirky patterns (think smiling broccoli, watercolor plants, and empowering messages like "I am the future") made without disperse dyes. The Center for Baby and Adult Hygiene Products (BAHP), which reviews diaper safety and health, says disperse dyes are known to irritate sensitive skin. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has also done some small studies on diaper dye dermatitis. While dyes aren't the most common reason for diaper rash or dermatitis, if it's a problem your baby deals with, it's nice to know there's a new option for you on store shelves.

Pampers

Pampers also kept some of parents' favorite features, like the pH-sensitive wetness indicator strip or the serious absorbency powers. The difference is that, in these diapers, that absorbent material is made up of chlorine-free wood pulp, polymers, and mineral-based odor controlling ingredients.

The company also made sure to get their new Pure diapers tested by dermatologists, who found them clinically proven to be hypoallergenic and a gentle option for little ones with sensitive skin. The Skin Health Alliance also gave them their "skin safe" seal of approval. So, if your babe has had some sensitivities in the past, these diapers may be worth a try.

Pampers Pure diapers are available in sizes N through 6, and prices will vary by retailer. You'll find them online and on shelves at major retailers where diapers are sold, like Wal-Mart, Target, and Amazon.

Homeless czar visits non-profit's Diaper Drive | Regional News - KPVI News 6

Rain Dillon joined dozens of others lining up at the brick building on South 26th Street Tuesday. The mother of two recently lost her job after contracting COVID-19, but she left with a little relief: diapers courtesy of Family Promise of Yellowstone Valley.

Dillon, like many parents nationwide, has been forced to contend with the dual anxieties of raising a family and keeping them safe during the pandemic. The outbreak has also forced local and national organizations offering relief to the homeless to adopt strategies like drive-through food and clothing drives.

“If I didn’t have this, we wouldn’t even have diapers,” Dillon said.

Homelessness has been on the rise nationwide in recent years, preceding the added economic instability of COVID-19. According to a new plan published by the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness, unsheltered homelessness increased by nearly 21% between 2014 and 2019. This number includes veterans, spouses leaving abusive household and children still attending school without a home.

The USICH plan, published this month, marks a pivot from the “housing first” policies of the Obama administration. Instead of prioritizing getting people housed with no conditions attached, the new plan aims to “optimize self-sufficiency in homeless assistance programs and reduce reliance on public assistance.”

Robert G. Marbut Jr., the executive director of the USICH, oversaw the completion of the plan after he assumed his role in December 2019. He was also on hand in the Day Center of Family Promise on Tuesday, speaking with staff and occasionally helping to carry donated coats to those waiting outside.

“We want to be able to allow local communities to customize, because what is needed in Billings is different from what is needed in Tallahassee, which is different from Los Angeles,” said Marbut, who has visited more than 30 states in the past 200 days, meeting with local officials combating homelessness.

Montana Rescue Mission Executive Director Matt Lundgren met with Marbut Tuesday morning and showed him the plans for MRM’s new Unified Campus project. As they chatted, Marbut offered ideas on how the mission could structure some of its current shelter to better accommodate individuals and keep them protected from COVID-19.

Marbut also told Lundgren to anticipate a rise in the number of homeless people the mission serves. As COVID-19 continues to negatively impact the economy, Marbut told Lundgren more people are likely to need the services offered by the shelter, Lundgren said.

Marbut told the Gazette that the current number of homeless in the United States is just under 225,000 as of Tuesday, a figure that he said came in under expectations. The number of evictions nationally during the pandemic has also been lower than expected by the USICH, but the agency is braced for that to change.

Lisa Donnot, the executive director of Family Promise, said the pandemic brought a spike in local residents looking for emergency housing, many of whom faced evictions after losing their job during the past seven months.

“Now the weather is getting colder, so a lot people who have been sheltering in cars, especially those with children, are looking for a warm place to stay,” she said.

Along with disrupting the lives of the non-profit’s clients, the outbreak also derailed Family Promise’s “Interfaith Hospitality Network.” The program that places families in houses of worship throughout the city closed due to concerns of spreading the virus. The switch to using apartments, hotels and trailers, Donnot said, has produced a “huge waiting list.”

“I personally am really excited to see some changes coming in the future, and I haven’t felt that way in a while,” she said.

Billings Mayor Bill Cole, also present at the day center Tuesday, said the city government depends on non-profit organizations to care for the homeless. That dependence will be tested as temperatures continue to drop, and more people living in a county with the state’s highest number of COVID-19 cases look to Family Promise and the MRM for help.

“With COVID-19 numbers up, we don’t know what winter’s going to look like so far, the rescue mission has been very fortunate in keeping COVID out of its facility, but with the numbers as high as they are, we are just waiting for the other shoe to drop, I’m afraid,” he said.

The “Diaper Drive Through” for Family Promise also provides clothes and other supplies for families in need and runs every Tuesday from 4-6 p.m., and every Friday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Those interested in donating can visit www.familypromiseyv.org/donate or call 406-294-7432.

Easy Ways New Parents Can Save Money on Everything from Diapers to Daycare - Yahoo Lifestyle

diapers.indah.link

Nighttime feedings, diaper changes, unsolicited advice, finding ways to save money. These are all common things new parents deal with when they bring their little one home from the hospital. While nighttime feedings will get less frequent with time (we promise), diaper changes become second nature within a week or two and even unsolicited advice is easier to tune out, coming up with ways to save money can be a tougher nut to crack. Thankfully, moms are here to come through with money saving hacks and ideas that helped them.

Just when you think you’ve found your rhythm with your new budget, your child might develop an allergy and require the pricier formula. Or you’ll discover your air conditioner broke during the first week of summer — coincidentally, also the first week of your maternity leave (just me?). Or maybe you had underestimated the sheer volume of diapers your little one will require. It happens to the best of us. Fortunately, that last one is easier thanks to Huggies Rewards+ powered by Fetch Rewards app, which lets you earn exclusive gifts and valuable rewards when you shop.

To help make saving money more manageable, we’ve rounded up some actually helpful advice (you’re welcome!) from been-there-done-that moms who found unique ways to save money on everything from diapers to daycare.

Our mission at SheKnows is to empower and inspire women, and we only feature products we think you’ll love as much as we do. Please note that if you purchase something by clicking on a link within this story, we may receive a small commission of the sale.

Shop sales to stock up on items for the future

“I love when everything goes on sale for Back to School. I take advantage of the deep discounts by doubling down on my purchases. If there’s a great sale on a pair of shoes, boots or sneakers, I will buy them in my daughter’s current size as well as her next size. She’s still growing and it’s so awesome to know that she can wear something she loves even as she moves into the next size. Because of the sale price, I’m often getting two pairs for the price of one!”

“I live in Irvine, California and it’s overall very expensive here! When I got pregnant, I started looking around for daycare and it was around $1700-1900 per month for a newborn. I was stressing so much and even questioned myself if I should give up my career and just be a stay at home mom. Then I joined a mom’s group in Irvine and found a smaller size daycare for half the price. Also moms in the group would share when [things] go on sale at Target and free events happening in the community. It was the best thing ever and saved me a lot of money and stress!”

— Cheeia Xiong, founder of Notes by Cheeia

Buy transitional cribs, strollers and car seats

“With my first, I bought a baby car seat, not realizing that there would be a need for another car seat when she outgrew it. So when she did, I bought the Graco 4Ever convertible one and I chose it for four reasons: it should be the only one I have to buy (car seats are expensive!), at the time it was the number-one rated, the cup holders are attached for when we go on road trips, and I loved how it was adjustable to position them laying down or sitting up. We lived in two cities about two hours apart, so we spent a lot of time on the road. They still love to lean back in the seats now. Also, the design just looks really secure.”

— Traci Houston, founder of The Gestational Diabetic

“We bought a stroller that was convertible from new born until now — [my son] is 5-years-old. [We did the] same with his crib.”

— Yully Hernandez, founder of Julesalmnt

Use your FSA for birthing classes

“Sign up for online birth and parenting education classes that accept FSA cards (both Discover Childbirth Education from Arrow Birth and Complete Postpartum Prep by Navigating Parenthood accept FSA payments).”

— Shari Stamps, founder of Navigating Parenthood

Buy second-hand

“Get a second-hand stroller. Take a look at your local donation center, garage sales, Salvation Army or Goodwill. To inspect it, push it around a bit while it’s empty, then put something heavy in it and push it again. You’ll see if it can handle the weight and if the wheels still spin properly. Make sure the strap and buckle still work. If you purchase it, wipe it down with a sanitizing wipe, scrub if you need to, especially the front handle bar because that tends to be where kids put their mouths. If the fabric is removable, take it off and throw it in the wash. For peace of mind, you’ll want to visibly see the difference after you’ve cleaned it.”

— Traci Houston, founder of The Gestational Diabetic

“Snag barely used baby gear in online yard sale groups for a fraction of the cost you would spend to buy them new. These items can easily be sanitized, and you are able to find some incredible deals!”

“My number one tip for parents with babies, toddlers, and small children (even teenagers!) is to utilize your local library for books. We love encouraging our children to read regularly, but keeping up with the cost of new books is sometimes impossible. So, we use the ‘place on hold’ feature on our local library’s website and check out about 10-20 books per month through them. We have found this to be a huge money-saver for our family, and it helps our children as they are always getting ‘new’ books each month that they can read and re-read all month long. Even during quarantine, we are able to pick up our books at a social-distance-friendly pick up site. It’s super easy and helps with sustainability and reusing and saving money.”

— Leslie Windell, founder of the Leslie W. Blog

Embrace your creativity and DIY

“As a parent to two girls, I found out quickly that kids come with a lot of added expenses. My first venture into DIY was when I designed our baby nursery. I took a very high end design as my inspiration and recreated it for just a fraction of the cost with smart shopping and a little hands on work. The results were amazing. The first thing we did was put up a chair rail. We didn’t have any fancy saws or equipment so instead of buying a chop saw or hiring out the labor we bought a simple miter box saw kit that you can get at Lowe’s for about $10. It worked like a charm and allowed us to hang a cute white chair rail around the perimeter of the room. I would have loved to hang bead board under the chair rail, but again the budget got in the way. That was when I learned the power of paint and how, when used effectively, can completely transform a room. Instead of bead board we painted strips in varying widths and colors (this was back when strips were “in”) and it was so adorable.”

— Melinda Paulsell, founder of Missouri Girl Home

Make your own baby food

“When your baby is old enough to begin eating solid foods, instead of paying top dollar for baby food in jars make your own baby food from scratch. Cooking your own baby food cannot only help you save money, but can also help to ensure your baby is eating the healthiest and freshest foods possible. It’s also easier to make than you might think!”
